How to choose the best dog chews for your dogs

It’s a fact that your little furry ones have teeth that they would want to use on anything and everything. What they practice their chewing skills on does not matter to them. Chewing on things is natural behaviour of dogs; it allows them to explore the world around them, exercise their jaws and even clean their teeth. Apart from these, it also engages them mentally. However, the lack of proper items to chew on leads to destructive chewing. So, it is up to us to provide them with the proper chews to exercise teeth on. Not only will this help their dental health, but also will keep them from being destructive.

Dog chews can be classified into two types. It is important to know the pros and cons of both so as to make an informed choice. The two types of chews available in the market are:

dog treats

1. Edible

Edible dog chews are the ones on which dogs can chew and consume. The question of digestibility comes into picture here. Even though the product might be edible it does not mean that it is good for your dogs or completely digestible. Some examples of edible dog chews are rawhide, pig ears, rawhide, bully sticks, bones etc. However, the safety and digestibility of these products are questionable, to put it mildly, thus calling them edible is simply an opinion we don’t subscribe to. On the other hand, dog chews like long-lasting Himalayan yak cheese bars are not only easily digestible but also provide additional nutrients along with dental hygiene. Feeding animal-based chews are under a lot of debate due to widespread issues such as bacterial contamination, digestibility, added poisonous chemicals etc.

2. Non-Edible

Non-edible dog chews are made out of material such as plastic, nylon or rubber. You can find a lot of variety in this category as chew toys come in all shapes, colours and sizes. A few examples of non-edible dog chews are rope toys, chewable rubber toys and plastic bones. Even though they come in a lot of fun shapes and sizes that are made to accommodate all breeds and sizes of dogs, they, however, are not completely devoid of any problems. Dogs tend to chew through them and swallow smaller pieces which could create problems later on. In addition to that, they also have a lot of colouring and chemicals that make them last longer and look good. These could have severe effects on your dog’s health in future.

Here are a few things that should be kept in mind while buying chews for dogs:

1- If you are choosing edible chews, then choose the ones that are designed to please his palate without upsetting his tummy. You can also get chews that have additional nutritional benefits. Dog chews such as Dogsee chew cater to the needs of sensitive dogs as they are gluten-free, grain-free and natural.

2- Read the label and the fine print before buying any product. Know what goes into your dog’s mouth before you give it to them because eventually it will also go inside their tummies. Read the packaging and search for terms such as natural, grain-free, human grade etc.

3- Look and feel the product yourself before buying it. Check for the hardness, texture and durability of the product.

4- Choose a chew that is appropriate for your dog’s life stage and breed. Smaller dogs won’t be able to chew on bigger chews while puppies require specific chews that are meant to help them with teething, older dogs tend to have weaker gums, thus, keep the size, age and breed of your dog in mind when you select a chew.

Whenever you buy a treat or chew for your dog remember to buy one that fits all your dog’s needs. Their allergies, age, strength, breed etc have to be taken into consideration. Always make an informed choice when it comes to your furry babies, they deserve the best that we can provide them with.
