While barking is certainly a part of a dog’s nature, it can end up scaring young ones, keeping owners up at night and upsetting neighbours, especially if you are staying in an apartment. However, you can go in for Indian Dog Breeds that don’t bark much. While training is the key to stopping bad behaviour in dogs, there are a few Indian dog breeds that bark way less than their furry peers, and can be a good option for apartment dwelling dog lovers. 1. Dhole or Indian Wild Dog:

Dhole is an Indian Wild Dog also known as Red Dog or Red fox dog because it has the same features as that of a red fox. Dhole can kill a prey up to 10 times its size. Dhole is a very social animal and usually lives in a large clan so it is ideal for a large family.

2. Jonangi:

Jonangi is a rare native Indian breed and shares many of its characteristics with Indian pariah dogs. Jonangis are very intelligent, easily trainable, extremely agile, and very courageous dogs. A unique speciality of the breed is that it makes a yodelling sound instead of barking. Jonangi is not particularly friendly with strangers hence it’s a one-family or one-man dog.

  • Origin: East coast of India, from Bengal to Kanyakumari.
  • Weight: 13 – 22 kg
  • Height: 17 to 21 inches.
  • Temperament: Very loyal and Intelligent.
  • Coat: Short, thick and shiny coat of multiple colours.
  • Life Expectancy: 10 -14 years

 3. Chippiparai Dogs:

 Chippiparais are tall and athletic native Indian dogs and are very alert dogs who have excellent stamina and running speed. They require a lot of exercise, minimal grooming and open space for running and playing. They are known for being very quiet dogs, but they don’t like strangers touching them. Most breed members will rarely bark, especially if they are properly trained and exercised.

4. Kanni:

Kanni is a rare indigenous South Indian dog breed that was used mainly for hunting. Kanni is slim, agile, moderately built and graceful with a deep chest. They are also known for barking less and make for very homely pets.
