Popular Foreign Dogs breeds in India

Take a stroll in a park or around your apartment complex and some of the pet dogs that you are likely to encounter would be a Labrador, Retriever, Beagle, or a Pug. Did you know that all of these and some of the most commonly seen dog breeds are actually foreign. In a bid to have the smartest or the prettiest pet, people have since long been importing these breeds to India and they now feel like our regular indies.

BEAGLE:

Beagles are a small sized compact dog which belong to the ‘hound’ breed. With one of the best-developed smell sense, they are used as a sniffer dog in airports. Weighing around 20 to 25 kgs their lifespan is around 12 to 15 years. Beagles look much like foxhound and are best for small apartments as they are small in size. It’s the most adorable and preferred dog breed, worldwide due to its intelligence and friendly nature.

PUG:

Pug belongs to ‘Companion’ dog breed and is brought from China to Europe in the 16th century. It is the most popular breed of dog in India after getting featured in Vodafone ad. They are known for being sociable and gentle. They are very lively and alert in nature which makes them a good watch dog.

DACHSHUNDS:

Originated in Germany, Dachshunds are short legged, long bodied dog breed and one of the most popular apartment dogs in India. Its distinctive shape first catches the eye. But it is appreciated for its character, intelligence, hunting spirit, and absolute devotion. It might be the smallest of the hounds, but biggest in spirit.

A female Dachshund from West Virginia went against all odds and adopted an orphaned piglet and nursed him and raising him as one of her own!

SAINT BERNARD:

St. Bernard are very large working dog breed, originally found in Switzerland and Italy. The Saint Bernard are usually brown and well famous for its enormous size.

‘Nana’, a brave saint bernard was honoured by the Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village in New York for a saving her family from fire.

ROTTWEILER:

Rottweiler or Domestic German dog are used as search and rescue dogs as they are very smart. In German, it is known as Rottweiler Metzgerhund which means  Rottweilbutchers’ dogs because they were used to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market. The breed is black coated with rich tan markings and has a powerful appearance.

Rottweiler ‘Eve’ pulled her paralysed, paraplegic owner Kathie to a nearby ditch, just far enough to avoid the explosion of her burning truck.

GOLDEN RETRIEVER:  

Golden Retriever dog breed is a perfect family dog, used during the hunting and shooting of waterfowl. The breed is one of the most popular family dogs in India.

‘Patty’ a yellow lab retriever won the Blue’s runner-up award in 2001 for saving her owner from drowning while on a winter duck hunting excursion

LABRADOR:

Apart from the UK and the US Labrador is one of the most popular dog breeds in India as well. They are a medium-large sized dog breed with a lifespan of 12-15 years. They are playful, athletic and are even used as autism assistance dogs.

‘Katrina’ the lab, was honoured at the Genesis Awards with a standing ovation for saving a drowning man from rising flood waters.

GERMAN SHEPHERD:  

German Shepherd is a medium to large sized Shepherd dog and one of the highly preferred breeds for Indian climate. It is a dog of action and is not willing to be a couch potato. It is a very protective dog and if trained properly they turn out to be a great family dog.It is also used by police for assistance in search and rescue.

‘Trakr’ helped dig through 30 feet of debris at the World Trade Center “ground zero” site and located the last human survivor of the attack.

BULLDOGS:

Bulldogs are found in North America and were developed as fighting dogs. Weighing around 40 to 50 pounds, their lifespan is around 8-12 years. These dogs are famous for their roles as police dogs and celebrity pets.

‘Napoleon’, the English bulldog swam deep out into a lake and rescued a burlap sack containing 6 abandoned kittens!

MASTIFF:  

Mastiff is the most famous and popular breeds of the 19th century. It is one of the oldest dog breed.The Mastiff dogs are intelligent and trained to protect the local tribe’s sheep from wolves, leopards and bears. They are home dogs and need minimum exercise. So those who prefer to have a dog of great size can opt mastiff.

‘Barney’, a bull mastiff saved his autistic owner who collapsed at front door in early hours of the morning due to high blood sugar, just a week after its adoption from the rescue center

Non Indian dog breeds have nutritional needs very different from Indian dogs. They need extra care and special diet to maintain their health. Apart from healthy nutritious food, also make sure to choose dog treats which provide wholesome nutrition to your dog like Dogsee Chew.
